The St. Monica Year of Prayer: What is God saying to me?

Posted Sep 17, 2017

One of the reasons we pray is to discover what God is saying to us about our lives. Next year when our

focus is on our vocation we will spend more time with this idea but for now we can acknowledge that we don’t need to feel lost and alone. God loves you and has a plan for your life.

So how do we find out what God’s plan is?

I am not perfect at this but I have a few thoughts that may help and are particularly helpful to me when I have difficult decisions to make in my life. In hindsight all of these things below were part of my

discernment to follow God as a priest; I just didn’t realize it at the time. So here is a list of things that can help you when you are praying. I hope they help you encounter God’s love for you and to discover His plan for you.

  1. Patience: take your time and give God a little space to speak to you. God may have an instant answer for you or he may not, and I have to say probably not. Rarely do good things happen instantly; friendships, understanding, developing a talent or gift; all of these take time.
  2. Humility: Ask God what he wants of you, don’t tell Him what you want. This is super important and often the most challenging part of prayer. However learn to trust that God loves you and will lead you to what is best for you.
  3. God is seeking you and, oddly enough, not you Him. Most of the time prayer is just the ongoing battle to remove the distractions of our own desires so that we can experience, know, and hear God’s voice in our lives. Don’t be frustrated by the distractions just keep trying to get rid of them. When you do that you are praying and over time it will get easier.

I hope this helps a little and know that you all are in my prayers!
