Bereavement

The Bereavement Ministry’s mission is to reach out in compassion and support to parishioners and their families who have experienced the loss of a loved one through death. We do this through personal presence to families at the time of the funeral and through regular contact during the following twelve months after the death.Care and Support Funeral Planning

We also attend all visitations and funerals held at St. Monica, assisting the priest and families as needed. Together with the priest we assist the family with funeral liturgy planning. If the family desires a Wake service or a Rosary at the visitation, we try our best to accommodate.

After the funeral, we provide letters and cards of support to the bereaved for a period of one year after the death. Additionally we sponsor a Memorial Service, held annually, which is open to all in the parish who have experienced the loss of a loved one through death.

We have a small library of books and tapes on grief and loss which are available to parishioners upon request. We provide information about grief support opportunities in the community.

For those interested in joining this ministry, training and educational materials are provided. Continuing education is provided for our ministry members as, in faith and hope, we support others in their grief. Contact: Michelle Meer at 317-293-7811, or Mary Jo Gallagher at 317-872-3005.

Funeral Planning

Dealing with the death of a loved one is difficult. Our Bereavement Ministry aims to ease the pain of this difficult time. In most cases, the funeral home will call the Parish Office with you and together with you arrange a date and time for the funeral Mass. Then, the parish office or priest will call you to arrange a time to plan the funeral liturgy, offering choices for music selections and scripture readings that you might wish to include. The Bereavement Minister will be there for you at that meeting and on the day of the funeral to help in any way needed.

Funeral guidelines for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis are available here.
